I am currently working to understand better how much marketing data we are actually losing due to cookie consent requirements, and how much of that loss is due to the way consent is initially set up. The difficult part is that the website I'm looking at receives traffic from multiple regions. It might be that applying the strictest consent rules to all visitors could result in excessive limitations on data collection, particularly since the requirements differ from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. At the same time, however, I don't want to collect any additional GA4 or advertising data by circumventing people's consent preferences.

I'd like to know how other people are dealing with this in practice. Are you modifying your consent setup based on the visitor's location, or do you use a single global consent model because it's easier to manage? As someone who has moved to a regional strategy, did you really observe a significant improvement in the marketing data available to you, or was the difference less than you had expected?

I would like to know what you have done, especially in managing traffic across Europe, the US, and other regions. I am currently trying to work out where the balance should be between remaining compliant, respecting users' choices, and having sufficiently reliable data to make marketing decisions.

We are adopting a regional approach, and frankly, I believe it makes sense when you have sufficient international traffic to warrant the additional complexity, since different jurisdictions have their own requirements. It is not always necessary to treat every visitor the same way.

Even so, location-based rules must be implemented with care. You still have to respect the real consent signal, and your analytics tags must align with it. Simply altering the banner according to a user's IP address isn't a solution to the issue.

We adopted a conservative global setup since no one on our team wanted yet another complicated thing to maintain.

It's possible we could obtain more useful data by using regional rules. Maybe so, but I'd like to see some evidence before I devote time to rewriting the implementation. There's also the issue of how accurately you determine the visitor's region and what happens when that determination is incorrect.

Simplicity does have some real value for a smaller marketing team.
